Scouting is open to all boys between the ages of 11 and 17. Interested youth and their families are welcome to visit any of our troop meetings.

Troop 53 Scout meetings are held Tuesday nights from 7:00–8:15 PM. Our troop follows the same schedule as Swampscott Public Schools, including vacations, holidays, and weather closures.
Meetings are held in the basement of St. John the Evangelist located at 174 Humphrey Street.

We offer a variety of experiences and programs throughout the year, such as: all-weather camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, rock climbing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, community service, annual fundraising, and more.

All Scouts should obtain the Scouting BSA Uniform Handbook.
Scouts are responsible to purchase their uniform, including: hat, shirt, neckerchief, pants, belt, sash, and insignia. Woggles (neckerchief fasteners) will be provided by the troop. See the full uniform checklist.
Additionally, Scouts may need appropriate outdoor supplies for programs, such as a sleeping bag, mess kit, flashlight, etc.

A merit badge is an award earned by Scouts for completing specific requirements in a variety of topics, including: sports, crafts, science, trades, business, future careers, and more.
There are more than 140 merit badges, and any Scout may earn any of these at any time. See the current list of available merit badges.

Advancement is the process by which Scouts progress from rank to rank. Scouting ranks are as follows:

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Scouting program. Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank after achieving the previous six ranks, attaining a set of 21 required merit badges, the proposal and completion of a service project, and a lengthy review process.
